3 Questions To Ask Before Hiring A Moving Company

Are you thinking about accepting a job offer in another city? Does the thought of relocating make you doubt whether or not taking this new job is the best option? Moving to a new city can be a challenge at the best of times. Thankfully, there are professional movers who can help make the experience easier and at least a little more pleasant. But with so many different movers to choose from, it may not be obvious initially which one is going to be the best one for your move. Before you hire anyone for your move, here are some questions that can help you to decide whether the company is right for you:

Are you bonded and insured? When you're moving all of your worldly possessions, it's a good idea to make sure that you're covered in the event of an accident. In the unlikely event that a driver runs into the moving van, causing a fire that destroys some or all of your belongings, you want to be able to recover at least some of their value. That said, not all insurance is created equal. Some moving companies have insurance that will pay replacement value for your belongings, others will pay based on weight. The first option is obviously a more expensive one and may not be the best if you have mostly flat-pack furniture. On the other hand, if you have a lot of antique or otherwise valuable furniture then you want to make sure that you're properly compensated in the event of a loss.

What happens if the house isn't ready when the moving truck arrives? All sorts of things can happen on moving day when you get to your new city. Perhaps the old tenants haven't moved out yet or perhaps a pipe sprung a leak and needs to be fixed before you can move in. Whatever the case, you need to know what will happen with your stuff. Some moving companies offer free storage for a limited time while others will start charging you immediately, and there are some that may insist that you find your own storage unit to use. Always know what your options are and what each one will cost before hiring any company.

Is there any promotional pricing right now? In general, most people want to move during the first or last weeks in any given month. Because of this, moving companies are usually completely booked at this time. But many fewer people are willing to move in the middle of the month, leaving movers without anything to do. Some companies may be willing to give you a bit of a discount if you are willing and able to move during this otherwise quiet time.

With a spouse who has a busy, high-demand job, we are always moving, and it can be really difficult to deal with. I started focusing more carefully on planning a great move a few years ago, and it was fascinating to me to see how much of a difference it made in my own life. This blog is here to help you to plan a great move and to make things easier the next time you have to relocate.
